A Glossary of Internet Marketing Terms

Cloaking - A method for displaying different content to a search engine crawler. Usually an attempt to trick the engine in order to obtain some kind of a ranking benefit.

CPA - Cost Per Action. This is a metric used in online marketing . It tells you what was the cost of the user performing a desired action such as downloading, clicking, subscribing etc.

CPC - Cost Per Click. This term relates to paid advertising e.g. Google Ads or Facebook Ads

CPL - Cost Per Lead. Another metric that tells us how much it cost us to acquire each lead. You calculate it by dividing total cost of the marketing campaign by the number of leads received.

CPM - Cost Per thousand impressions. An impression is a single instance of shoving your ad or banner to a visitor. Used in Online Advertising (e.g via banners). An alternative to CPC.

CPS - Cost Per Sale. Another useful metric.

CTR - Click Through Rate. This metric shows the ratio of people who saw the ad to the number of people who clicked on it. 

FFA - Free For All Link page. A page containing a list of user added links.

PFI - Pay For Inclusion. This term is used in paid directory advertising.

PI - Paid Inclusion. A term often used in Directory Advertising.

PPC - Pay Per Click. The amount of money you have to pay for each click on your ad.

ROI - Return On Investment. How much money you make in relation to what you spent.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. It involves changes to the page code and or content to improve website ranking in the search results.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing. Mainly relates to link building to improve your website ranking in the search results

SERP - Search Engine Result Page. The listing of sites displayed by the search engine after you enter a search query.
There are a lot strange terms and abbreviations related to Internet Marketing. If your eyes glaze over when people start talking about CTR, PPC and CPC, don't despair.
